Cautious Clay
Cautious Clay is the project of NYC based singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Josh Karpeh. Known for his warm, genre-blending sound, Cautious Clay moves fluidly between alternative R&B, indie pop, soul, jazz, and electronic music, pairing intimate songwriting with rich, self-produced arrangements. A skilled flutist and saxophonist as well as a vocalist, he brings a distinctly musical and textural approach to every release. He first broke through with “Cold War,” a standout single that introduced his understated vocal style, sharp melodic instincts, and emotionally precise lyricism. Since then, Cautious Clay has built a reputation as an artist’s artist, collaborating with and writing alongside a wide range of acclaimed musicians while maintaining a sound that feels personal, thoughtful, and deeply human. Across his catalog, he explores love, identity, ambition, vulnerability, and modern disconnection with a rare balance of sophistication and accessibility. Whether through stripped-back performances or layered productions, Cautious Clay creates music that feels both intimate and expansive, rooted in craft while remaining emotionally immediate.
